Getting support & Access to Work

Identify support needed

What is a reasaonable adjustment?

'A 'reasonable adjustment' is a change that must be made to remove or reduce a disadvantage related to: an employee's disability when doing their job. a job applicant's disability when applying for a job.' - ACAS

You do not need an offical diagnosis to ask for reasonable adjustments but it can be useful to understand how your ADHD affects your work life, and have some understanding yourself.

Apply for Access to Work

You must have asked your workplace for reasonable adjustments first, then you can make an application to DWP Access to Work.

You can get Access to Work if you are in work of more than 1 hour a week, are part, full time or self-employed, and if you are on an apprenticeship, work trial or placement.

Access to Work can provide funding for equipment that combats your negative ADHD symptoms, such as noise-cancelling headphones or a standing desk, and pay for support such as an ADHD coach or an admin support worker.

(It may be useful to apply to Access to Work with the support of an ADHD coach, as they will be able to support you with the application and ensure you get what you need.)
